Which style of yoga is best for me?

Updated: Feb 7, 2022

New to yoga? Want to try yoga but are confused with so many options available in your gym? Or if yoga hasn't worked for you in the past, perhaps you were doing the wrong style not suitable for your body constitution and emotional inclination? Explore the popular styles here and pick the right class for you.

Yoga which started as spiritual practice thousands of years ago in the East, has developed into many traditions and styles over the past centuries. As a growing number of well-designed research reveals yoga’s health benefits, this Eastern philosophy is fast becoming a popular name amongst fitness enthusiasts and medical professionals alike.

Yoga has come a long way in recent years with unusual twists such as hip-hop yoga, naked yoga, HIIT yoga, and even goat yoga (running and jumping with goats and doing yoga).

Whether you are doing it for a high-power exercise, reducing your heart rate, in a corporate setting, or keeping up with your image-conscious Instagram shoots, yoga is much more than a physical exercise. By practising yoga regularly, you can’t deny that it brings a deeper mind-body awareness that heals your physical, mental and emotional bodies over time.

Whichever style you choose for your purpose, first and foremost, you need to understand that yoga is not a place to challenge and push through.
The Sanskrit word Ahimsa which means “non-harming”, is a primary virtue of yoga, and that starts with choosing the right style of yoga that brings balance and harmony to your body, mind and emotions.

Below, you will find descriptions of some of the traditional and modern adaptive popular styles and their suitability for different people.
