Kundalini yoga

Kundalini yoga is a blend of physical asanas and spiritual chanting of mantras, meditation and breathwork. It is a powerful spiritual process and should be approached with at most responsibility and reverence.

This high energy spiritual practice has become a new favourite for many celebrities and is growing in popularity. Generally, the practitioners wear white or white head coverings to ward off negative energy and extend their aura.

What it means

In Sanskrit, kundalini means “coiled snake”. The practice of kundalini yoga is to awaken the dormant Kundalini energy from its coiled form at the base of the spine and take it to the seventh chakra at the crown.

What to expect

The kundalini practice generally has three parts, the opening chant followed by asanas paired with breathwork and the final closing meditation. You will be holding the poses for a longer time with challenging breathwork. The well-taught kundalini yoga class is like attending a therapy session with a gym workout and a fun singing class. However, caution should be exercised as it is not everyone!

Who is it suitable for?

Though kundalini yoga is gaining popularity equally amongst beginners and advanced yogis, the high energy yoga, in its essence, is the most dangerous form of yoga as it activates dormant energy. If you have not prepared your body, mind, and emotion to handle this energy, mental imbalances and physical difficulties will be created. Hence, it should be practiced with the necessary guidance.

I personally would be cautious in recommending this style to everyone as I strongly believe that there are asanas for general working, living, people like me and special ones for those ascetic yogis. Kundalini belongs to the latter as they can handle the high voltage without damaging them and others.
