Chair yoga was my go-to healer in my past life when I was sitting for hours in front of the computer in a toxic ‘me’ versus ‘you’ corporate world. The self-care asanas helped me release the tension and reduce anxiety, and eventually paved the way to my soul’s purpose of setting up the Yoga My Love studio.
Chair yoga was developed by Lakshmi Voelker-Binder in 1982 when one of her students was stricken with arthritis and could no longer get down on the floor to practice Yoga. Since then, it has been introduced to the modern fitness world of yoga as an exercise for individuals and the elderly with health implications.
What it means
As the name suggests, chair yoga is practiced sitting on a chair or standing using a chair for support. Chairs have always been used as props for certain asanas in Iyengar yoga. However, using chairs in an informal way throughout the yoga session is the distinction in this type of yoga.
What to expect
Almost all traditional yoga poses are replicated and modified to accommodate chair yoga. You will move through flows of motion as in traditional yoga, sitting on the chair or using chair as a support for standing asanas that require balance. Like any other yoga practice, chair yoga will increase your flexibility, strength, and body awareness with the additional benefit of no strain on your knees and joints.
